Streams and Structures

Streams and structures. Becoming and being. Changing and changed. Yin and Yang. This duality is fundamental to the nature of software, and the nature of nature.

One cannot exist without the other. One is incomplete without the other. One becomes the other, and then the other becomes the one. One completes the other, and one is completed by the other.

They are our time and space. They are our universe.

In rolonics we recognize the need for both - sequentially and simultaneously. Every Rolon, every whole-part of our universe, is brought into existence through streams, exists as structures, is changed by streams, and changed into structures.

These are the verbs and nouns of our language.
The journals of earlier and later times.
The ledgers of existence as it changes over time.
The bases of our past, present, and future.
Our journey and our destination.

Structure/Stream/Structure is a common, if unrecognized, design pattern. Take for example PostScript.

A document is converted into a stream of postscript commands, which are passed to a printer where they are executed to create another structure, a printed page.

In the quick project, SAX events were streamed by parsing an XML document or by walking a Java object tree. These events are then composed into an XML page, test data (JXUnit), a Java object tree or an html page.

And in the CompStrm project, the database stores a stream of changes which are accessed in reverse order to construct the state of an object at any given time. Further, these streams are used to share local structures with other Arks, integrating them into the destination Ark's own structures when loaded.

For me, there are two advantages to structure/streaming: (1) as a transport mechanism for structures and (2) as an alternate form which may lend itself to transformations which could be quite difficult to apply to the original structure.

To me, structure/stream is like wave/particle--different aspects/forms/views of the same thing, but with very different natures.
